Cathlene Beck joined the Legal Aid Society of Columbus in October 2017 as a staff attorney with the Public Benefits Team. Before graduating from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2016, Cathlene earned a bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University’s College of Arts and Sciences, with majors in History and Political Science.
After graduation, she completed a fellowship that partnered LASC with Community Properties of Ohio. Through this fellowship, she acted as a generalist and provided civil legal assistance to low-income tenants living in Community Properties of Ohio housing. She worked with social workers and community partners to provide holistic services to families working to rise out of poverty. As a fellow, she had the opportunity to work closely with the residents of the Weinland Park neighborhood in the near-north side of Columbus.
Prior to earning her law degree, Cathlene served as a law clerk with LASC’s bankruptcy team, as well as clerking for The Ohio Poverty Law Center. She also served as a clerk for The Franklin County Public Defender’s Office in the Juvenile Division. This afforded her the opportunity to work with low-income children who were at risk of entering the criminal justice system.
