PUBLIC BENEFITS


LASC helps people with their legal problems in a variety of ways, such as legal information, advice, or representation. LASC’s Public Benefits Team gives advice and representation to clients with issues like:

  • Food Assistance (SNAP) **Important: SNAP benefits decreased in March! More information for Franklin County residents. More information for Delaware, Marion, Morrow, and Union County residents.
  • Child Care Assistance (Title XX) eligibility
  • Ohio Works First (OWF) eligibility and benefit amounts
  • Social Security (SSI, SSDI, RSDI) eligibility decisions, benefit amounts, overpayments 
  • Unemployment Compensation eligibility decisions, benefit amounts, overpayments
  • Emergency cash assistance (prevention, retention, and contingency, or “PRC”) 
  • Medicaid eligibility and coverage decisions
  • Medicare Part B premium assistance program (QMB, SLMB, QI-1) eligibility decisions
  • Health Care Marketplace eligibility decisions 
  • Insurance coverage decisions
  • Improper discharges from health facilities like nursing homes 
  • Charity Care Access (Hospital Care Assurance Plan “HCAP”)
  • Medical or consumer debt lawsuits
  • Veterans’ benefits

People can often handle common public benefits issues with legal information. Visit the Resource Center for legal information that may help you with your case before calling legal aid.


LASC may be able to help you in the following situations: 


  • Your application was denied
  • You applied but haven’t heard anything in more than 30 days
  • Your benefit amount was lowered
  • Your benefits stopped
  • An agency told you it paid you too much
  • A nursing home (or similar facility) is telling you to leave 
  • Your insurance company will not approve something your doctor said you need 
  • You are sued because of a medical or consumer debt
